Small work over Large work

by Frieda Anderson

As a textile artist it’s easy to decide the size of your work. You are not restricted by canvas size or pixel size or any other space restriction. But sometimes it helps to work small and restrict the size of your pieces to work out design details.

By working small I am able to try out color choices and placement choices. By working small it requires less of my time and energy and allows me to make color and design choices quickly, because I am working with my own hand dyed fabrics I need to make some color choices before I start constructing my design, and working small helps me visualize my choices.

Here is an example of what I call “thumb nail” work.

This World is on Fire - Triptych each piece 20” x 30” Small pieces.

Artist hand dyed cotton, machine pieced and machine quilted and embroidered.

This World is on Fire IV - 45” x 55” Artist hand dyed fabric, machine pieced and machine quilted. Large version.

Working small is fun, fast and rewarding creatively BECAUSE it is fast.
