Projective Device

$875.00
SOLD

46 x 38”

Pieced, quilted, and appliquéd; batik, hand-dyed, and commercial cotton; machine embroidery.

The composition of Projective Device was inspired by a series of my favorite paintings by

Marsden Hartley which he created as he worked through the loss of someone about whom he

cared deeply. In the field of mental health, a projective device is often an ambiguous image to

which people are asked to offer their unrestricted response. Some claim those responses provide

clues to the workings of the unconscious. (Perhaps the ink blot test is the most common

example.) For many, art, in almost all its forms, can serve this function. In the case of this work,

viewers are invited to create their own narrative. What emotions or memories does it evoke?

What story would you tell?
