LOOKING BELOW THE SURFACE – Art Quilt

$2,200.00

33.5”H x 43”W

I photographed the rippling water at a pond in North Georgia. I remember sitting there for a while, enjoying the patterns and the soothing effect of its sounds. As I considered how to interpret it in artwork, I realized that I could not see below the surface. For that, I had to imagine what I could not see.

The right half of the piece was created by hand printing with acrylics on very thin paper, allowing patterns of light and dark to give voice to shafts of light, movements, changes in temperature, and life forms I could not see.

Placing what I could see with my eyes side-by-side with what I could I can only see in my imagination allows me to portray this peaceful place in its fullness.

Monotype printing by hand and direct painting with archival acrylic paints. Transfer of original photo to cotton muslin. Collage construction and machine stitching and quilting. Finishing: bound and fabric-backed. The back has a hanging pocket and a rod, for traditional hanging tapestry presentation. All collaging is with archival matte acrylic medium, (which is invisible) and also protects the surface.

This work is one of 75 works juried from 155 applicants into the 2023 virtual exhibit, “Nature’s Patterns,” sponsored by the Rhode Island Watercolor Society.  It displayed as part of the online exhibit June 24 - July 28, 2023.
