INTENTIONAL IMPROV - Contemporary Art Quilt

Working with my hand-dyed cotton, linen and silk fabrics, I make contemporary art quilts. The process I use is to transfer my design to the top of freezer paper and use the freezer paper as a pattern. I call this Intentional Improve. This technique allows me to make curvy, complex designs.

Fall green is a great neutral color and will work with almost any color combination, as seen in my quilt Winter Trees. In the winter, lone trees make wonderful silhouettes to view. I love working with curved, pieced designs to add more fluidity and grace to my artwork. Leaves are a constant inspiration for me, and contrasting colors is a favorite color combo to work with.

The small work Lone Tree was a sketch for the larger quilt Winter Trees.

Come spring the trees begin to unfurl their leaves and bring joy to our hearts after the long, cold, dull winter months. The bright spring colors of the leaves and flowers that are being reborn convey hope for the year to come, as represented in the quilt Unfurling.

Working with this freezer paper curved template method, I can make almost anything I can draw with intent and dependable results. I love working this way.

“My Sacred Body My Divine Choice” hand dyed cotton, linen and silk fabric. Machine pieced and machine quilted

We are entitled to reverence and respect to make any choice for our body. We are capable of divine love, love of ourselves and our choices. My body My Choice, is how I feel about myself and everyone else to make the right choice for how they see themselves, their body and how we live our lives.
I wanted this fiber piece to reflect the power divinity and sacredness of the female form. The spiritual representation of red is power, energy, vitality, dominance, action, assertion, creation, survival, and passion. Pink is the color of feminine, nurturing and peace. As a woman I feel my power and am at peace with it.

An overflowing woven basket is a sign of social and financial success. An empty basket symbolizes disappointment, sadness, and depression. I choose success over disappointment; these baskets are full of hearts and love. Baskets have a tradition in fiber art as real vessels and in antique quilts as an early motif. I made my fiber art baskets contemporary and bold. When I finalized the color combinations of red and magenta, I knew it was right.
