Getting Out and Getting Inspired

by Elizabeth Schmidt

Although I live in Florida full time, I have family and friends spread throughout the country which gives me the opportunity to spend time in new places. Along with enjoying the regional attractions and sampling the local cuisine, I often search out fiber related shops and events. FYI, my husband and I share an interest (bordering on obsession perhaps) with bonsai trees, so I usually search out botanical gardens and bonsai related events as well. No matter where I travel, I find inspiration for my work. Whether it’s at a quilt show, an art exhibit, a museum or out in nature.

A few months ago I was visiting my son in New Mexico and noticed that there was a fiber art festival taking place during that time. According to their website, “The Albuquerque Fiber Arts Fiesta is a biennial fiber art event showcasing 14 local fiber art guilds and a wide variety of fiber art exhibits, classes, vendors, and special artists”. Well that sounded promising, so off I went. It did not disappoint! There were special exhibits showcasing the work of Irene Roderick (textile artist extraordinaire) and Stacia Lang (Hollywood Specialty Costumer) along with displays and vendors from a wide variety of artistic guilds including quilters, knitters, lace makers, weavers, beaders, wood turners and more. Seeing outstanding work from artists in different disciplines was really motivating for me. Although I probably (for example) will never do any wood turning, it was quite impressive. I may try to incorporate more beading into my work or maybe try my hand at weaving though. Time will tell.

SAQA was well represented at the fiesta, and I stopped in to “go fishing” with the wonderful Betty Busby.

I also ran into Debbie Jones (Fiber Art Rebel) who used to teach here in Florida. I’m inspired to use some of her products in a future quilt.

What a great surprise to run into both talented women and to be able to spend an unplanned day immersed in fiber art. Life is good!
