There is a jazz standard called Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered. The song originally appeared in 1940 in a Rogers and Hart musical called Pal Joey. It has since been performed and recorded by countless musicians including Rod Stewart and Cher. My husband, being a jazz musician, plays it often, and it may have been hearing him play it while we were sheltering during the Coronavirus pandemic that was the reason this art quilt was made.
This piece is a response to the coronavirus pandemic. The reds and oranges in the background fabric are chaotic with words like FEAR and FREEDOM and exploding coronavirus suns. The spikey fronds appliqued over the background are hand cut cyanotyped photograms. The world was under attack from a virus but I could safely be out in my garden.
