Incarnation
33” x 33.75”
This quilt portrays the archetype, The Alchemist, at work. The Alchemist's job is transformation, birthing new matter through altering forces, creating spiritual convergence. This, to me, is the artistic process. The vessel is an important icon of The Alchemist because it contains the substances that are to be transmuted. The vapor indicates the spiritual powers at work. The arcane formulas, shared through centuries and culture, provide the secrets of "turning lead into gold". The viewer might question his/her own practice of alchemy and in what ways spiritual transformation is created contributing to the highest potential of the human community.
An alchemist throughout all time has been seen as a master of negotiating powers. Historical examples are Nostradamus and Isaac Newton. In its highest manifestation this archetype seeks spiritual transformation. She becomes the catalyst for change in both herself and others. What she transforms is consciousness – becoming aware - aware of self, others, and the divine.
This archetype falls in my 10th house of my archetype wheel. Like an astrology chart, the archetype in this position, according to my Sacred Contract, is in the house of highest potential. It is that which I am becoming, rather than something that which I achieve. Following the inner voice to provide transformation is my drive, my mission, my purpose.
I love the book in the left-hand corner and the quilted markings of the background. They are meant to be the ancient arcane recordings of the formulas necessary to turn lead into gold. The truth is, though, that there are no formulas, and that transformation occurs only by being fully present and being open to the intuitive guidance and synchronicity in administering just the right mix of substances that combust matter into a new expression – bringing the priceless inner world into the hungry outer world.
Textile, acrylic paint, silk roving, cotton balls, machine quilting
