Styx and Stones by Gabriele DiTota - Contemporary Fiber Artist

I recently attended the opening night reception of the 33rd Annual All Florida Juried Art Show at the Court House Cultural Center Gallery in downtown Stuart, Florida. I was honored to be exhibiting in the show which featured Florida artists in all media. The Gallery was quite crowded with attendees there to see the exciting art displayed on pedestals and on the walls.

My piece, Styx and Stones, is a departure from my usual themes. It started with a gift of fabric from a member of my small group, The Dirty Dozen, and a challenge to use the fabric in a work. At the time I was reading Under the Whispering Door by TJ Klune. The book relates an impression of the passage from life to what comes after. My art is often influenced by what I am reading or the music I am listening to. In this case the fabric became the backdrop for the River Styx, over which souls are ferried to their afterlife.

It is always exciting to see fiber art on display with all the other media. Attendees moved about the room and paused to admire my piece before moving on to examine a watercolor, view a sculpture or to gaze at a photography piece. My fiber art piece was a piece of art like all the others. The show will be open through February 29th. If you have the time it is worthwhile to go visit the exhibit and to explore the downtown Stuart FL area.
