A peek behind the scenes - Studio visit

Whenever I go to a Festival or gallery to experience art, my understanding is much deeper and more meaningful when I can also talk to the artist. I love to learn about processes. And I love to hear about inspiration and motivation.

Visiting an artist’s actual studio is like that… only better!

And, as an artist, the chance to talk to people and show my work in progress means a lot to me too.

In my studio, usually I am alone. (Not completely alone. NPR or music on CD keep me company.) This is when I spend time printing fabric pieces to create my textile collaged works.

My big worktable is the command center. This is where I lay out works I am constructing to get all the pieces together.

My sewing machines are also in my studio. I have several small, portable machines that I use for everything: construction seams, quilting the surface, even stitching through unusual materials. (Like fabric glued in layers or photos transferred to fabric.)

When somebody who is interested in learning more about my work makes an appointment and we visit, I get to see my own work and my own space with new eyes.

I enjoyed a recent visit with folks from out of town who were visiting my hometown, DeLand, and called to ask if they could drop by. Looking together at the things I use all the time — even the scraps of fabrics I keep in my fabric stash bins — prompted some great conversations about artmaking.

Soon I will be part of the annual artist studio tour in the DeLand area. If you are near Central Florida I hope you will plan to visit.

DeLand is an art-filled community: For the 2024 tour we have 27 artists to visit in 22 different stops.

This tour is FREE, a fun chance to discover art and to shop. All the artist information, including maps and artist addresses, is on the website ArtsTours.org. You can plan your own itinerary and visit at your own pace.

If you have questions beforehand, please contact me at bobbi@bobbibaughstudio.com.

One final invitation: If you are far away or can’t make it to the tour this year, I invite you to visit my studio each Sunday evening through my blog. I post images and thoughts about my work-in-progress. You’ll get to know more about me, my work, and what it means. https://www.bobbibaughstudio.com/blog

Have I mentioned what an honor this is for an artist? Having art lovers follow along, visit, and ask questions is what makes the time spent working alone worthwhile. THANK YOU!

Enjoy more of Bobbi Baugh’s work on the her gallery page.
