Elizabeth Schmidt has been living for the past 10 years on Florida’s gulf coast where the colorful sunsets never get old and continue to inspire her.
Before retiring to Florida, Beth spent her formative years in Vermont where she graduated from college with a degree in mathematics, established a long career as a computer programmer for a fortune 500 company and raised her family. For the past 40 years she has been a quilter, first creating traditional quilts that were inspired by antique quilts of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 2012 her focus changed after attending a workshop with Dianne Hire where the traditional “rules of quilting” were stretched and participants were encouraged to experiment with color, design and different surface embellishments.
From that point on she has created fabric art which often contains traditional quilting elements used in non-traditional ways. She continues to experiment with bold colors and interesting geometrics in her improvisational abstract designs.
Beth has won numerous awards for her work, and her work has been exhibited at AQS Quilt Week Paducah, the Houston International Quilt Festival, the Vermont Quilt Festival as well as various local exhibits.
When she’s not in her studio she can be found tending to her collection of bonsai trees, spoiling her dog and spending time with her family and friends.
